about

This was the 2nd 5-track EP released by Sing Sing on the independent Auckland-based label, Ode Records. This was released in 1986 and Sing Sing played some shows in Auckland to promote the record, but, sadly, Sing Sing's drummer, Ken Chung's father died not long after the EP's release and Ken, as the only surviving son (another tragedy in Ken's family was that his older brother, Jim, a wonderful supporter of Sing Sing, died young from cancer) was obliged to take over the overseeing of his father's extensive business interests.

With Ken's enforced departure, Sing Sing endeavoured to carry on because their career momentum was building and their public profile was increasing due to several high profile support slots and having two of their music videos being shown on national television, but, after auditioning several drummers, they could not find a drummer with the right chemistry to replace Ken.

Despite a sense of creative cohesion, a strong feeling of camaraderie and an impassioned will to create more original music together, situations in the various members' personal lives were pulling the band in different directions. With the failure to find a new drummer that the remaining band members felt would fit into the Sing Sing group dynamic both personally and professionally, the remaining band members agreed amicably to dissolve the band in August 1986.

Sing Sing had always been an ambitious band, both musically and professionally, striving to produce the best music they could in the hope of finding a wide audience, but, as is the case with many deserving artists in a small country at the bottom of the world, major success had eluded them. But they disbanded, not due to acrimony or "musical differences" or money squabbles (they never made enough money to squabble over), but because they were a loyal unit who had a common goal, but circumstances had conspired to put a spoke in their wheels on the road to that goal.

Sing Sing dissolved into the musical history of Aotearoa/New Zealand perhaps, in truth, only making it to the minor league, but Sing Sing went out with its head held high, proud of its achievements and the songs that it had contributed to the musical canon of Aotearoa and now, with the magic of the internet, perhaps to the world.

Sing Sing Auckland, New Zealand

In 1980, the songwriting partnership of Andrew Bell and Nick Scott was recruited into a Paeroa-based cover band, Godzilla, to beef up its original material. In 1983, to further their musical careers, they moved to Auckland. In 1984, they joined the rhythm section of Ken Chung and Pat Roxburgh, who had been playing together for years, and Sing Sing was born. In 1985, Chris Daly joined the lineup. ... more
