In 1980, the songwriting partnership of Andrew Bell and Nick Scott was recruited into a Paeroa-based cover band, Godzilla, to beef up its original material. In 1983, to further their musical careers, they moved to Auckland. In 1984, they joined the rhythm section of Ken Chung and Pat Roxburgh, who had been playing together for years, and Sing Sing was born. In 1985, Chris Daly joined the lineup.
