about

This 5-track EP was the debut EP by Sing Sing released in 1985 on the independent label, Ode Records. Sing Sing originally had four members: Andrew Bell (Lead vocalist and Lyricist), Ken Chung (Drums, backing vocals), Pat Roxburgh (Bass guitar, backing vocals) and Nick Scott (Guitar, keyboard).

As rehearsing and recording of this first EP proceeded, the band realised that they wanted to fatten their sound so, towards the end of the recording, Chris Daly was recruited on guitar. Chris was also happy to play the keyboard or join in on backing vocals when required.

The tracks, "Man of Sorrow", "Killing Time" and "Home and Dry" are relationship breakup songs that are a common element of the pop/rock genre and, indeed, in many other music genres.

The track, "Say You Will", is a meditation on the way some people are prepared to compromise their core values in order to succeed. This doesn't only apply to climbing the ladder of success in popular music. It can apply to almost any field of human endeavour.

The track, "Afghanistan", is a political protest song about the horrific consequences of the Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989). The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support Afghanistan's communist party which was in power, but was deeply unpopular. The Afghan mujahideen were various armed Islamist rebel groups who had risen up in rebellion against their government. Much like the Americans did in Vietnam, the Soviets got bogged down in a war that dragged on and one which they were losing. They escalated their war effort by saturation bombing of Afghanistan which resulted in huge loss of civilian life as well as destroying much of Afghanistan's infrastructure. The mujahideen were the good guys then, supported by America, but later they sheltered Al-Qaeda after that terrorist group committed the 9-11 attack against the Twin Towers in New York.

In 1984, they joined the rhythm section of Ken Chung and Pat Roxburgh, who had been playing together for years, and Sing Sing was born. In 1985, Chris Daly joined the lineup. ... more
